Odisha's government has now updated the list of ration card holders. The list of those who are eligible for food rationing changes as their income levels vary. The government determines who is eligible for food rations based on their ability to provide for their family. 

What is a Ration Card? 

A ration card is an official document provided by the Indian government that allows people to purchase necessary food goods at a reduced price. 

Why is it Essential? 

It is necessary since people's income levels vary depending on their economic situation and workability.  

Some people are more disadvantaged than others. To make up for their financial situation, the government provides ration cards to households.

Types of Ration Cards 

The Department of Food & Public Distribution of India divides ration cards into two categories, namely Priority Household (PHH) and Non-Priority Household (NPHH) 

  • Priority Household (PHH) - People who are legally qualified to get food at a reduced cost makeup PHH. There are four different categories that it consists of. 

  • Priority HouseHold Ration Card (PHH) - People who have no source of income and are denied certain benefits due to their economic situation fall under this group. 
  • Antyodya Anna Yojana (AAY) Ration Card - People who cannot procure two square meals a day fall into the category of an AAY Ration card. 
  • Annapurna Yojna (AY) Ration Card - It is a special type of Ration card provided only to elderly people above 65 years.
  • State priority cards - This type of special ration card is given to people with serious illnesses. 

Non-Priority Household 

People who do not belong to the Priority Household (PHH) fall into this category. Those who belong to this category would not receive any subsidized food rations from the government, although, they will receive the ration cards. 

Reasons to Have a Ration Card 

  1. As a government of India-issued official document, a ration card can be used for identity verification. 
  2. The aforementioned eligible group of persons can buy their meals for a lower cost.
  3. It can be used to verify identity while requesting other government documents, like a PAN.

  • Click - Click the Ration Card Application form. Take a Print out of the form. Fill in the necessary details. 
  • Submit - Sumit your form to the nearest DFO office. 
  • Check - Check your status using the registered application number. 


Once you've taken all the required actions, you can unwind and watch for the delivery of your card. Additionally, you can track your status by obtaining a report by going to the official government website, selecting "NFSA Card, and Beneficiary," then choosing your district and block.
